ARTIST STATEMENT
Many people find great comfort in the security of introspection, the solitude of their habits, the sanctuary of their privacy; a place where they can truly confront the process of self-actualization. The dynamics of contemporary society integrate one common theme – self-image. Social media and technological saturation have created an era of image distortion and filtration in order to promote the best version of one’s public self. The cost of this filtration is the loss of authenticity when it comes to addressing trauma, controversy, and struggle. In this idea, we create the best version of our lives in our public image. My work is an exploitation of this dissonance between the public and the private self, the creation of coping mechanisms, and my own journey with confronting reality. By creating patterns and recalling memories, I highlight my journey with the coping, feelings, and battles that are contained in the limits of appearing perfect. In the never-ending stride for perfection, my work is the raw response in replacement of self-help literature and public appearance - in this sense, a refuge from the public world where an allowance for the removal of the public self unveils the vulnerable and private, true self.
